⚠ A Branch Bank Without BranchesLow threat
Wells Fargo (WFC) — threat to the moat
Wells Fargo's branch closures are paid for in customers who have not yet opened their first account.
Closing branches is the easy part of Wells Fargo's cost programme, and its cost is deferred. The bank ran with 4,079 branches in June 20261 against 5,032 at the end of 20202.
The existing customers stay out of habit. New ones choose a bank when they open their first account, and a smaller physical footprint gives a younger customer one fewer reason to pick Wells Fargo.
The evidence so far is mixed rather than bad. The consumer segment's revenue was $37,919 million in 2023 and $37,362 million in 20253, a range of about 5% over three years.
The bank's own targets point the other way. Consumer Banking and Lending's efficiency ratio was 63% in 20254; each closed branch helps that number, which is why the incentive to keep closing them will not go away.
From the end of 2023 to June 2026 the bank closed 232 branches5 while mobile active customers rose about 13%6, a trade the deposit figures have so far supported.
The latest quarter moved the right way. Consumer Banking and Lending's efficiency ratio was 61% in the second quarter of 20267, two points better than for 2025, with eleven fewer branches than at the start of the year8.
The figure that would settle it is average deposits in Consumer Banking and Lending, $828.4 billion in the second quarter of 20269. If that line shrank for a full year while the branch count kept falling, the closures would be costing more than they save.
