Major ClientsWide moat

Wells Fargo (WFC) — moat facet

Wells Fargo has no customer it needs to name, and more than half its deposits come from households.

Wells Fargo has no major clients in the sense this page usually means. Its annual report contains no customer-concentration disclosure, and no depositor, borrower or trading counterparty is large enough to name. As a bank it has no order backlog either; its nearest equivalent is the deposit base itself.

Households supply most of the money.

The concentration that matters is by kind of customer. Consumer Banking and Lending held $828.4 billion of the bank's $1,465.6 billion of average deposits in the second quarter of 2026, about 57%123. Corporate and Investment Banking held $234.8 billion and Commercial Banking $189.5 billion4.

Four relationships are worth separating. Households and small businesses supply the cheap money. Wealthy clients pay fees on assets the bank manages. Card and auto borrowers are the customers the bank is now adding fastest. And some customers are also plaintiffs: the bank was ordered in 2022 to repay customers over practices "affecting over 16 million consumer accounts"5.

That last group makes Wells Fargo's customer relationship different from its peers'. The franchise held because most customers were never harmed, and the ones who were are now paid redress rather than lost.

Credit quality across the client base is good. Net loan charge-offs were $876 million in the second quarter of 2026, 0.34% of average loans, and nonaccrual loans $7,643 million, 0.74% of loans6. Consumer charge-offs were 0.74% and commercial 0.10%7, which says the losses are spread thinly across many borrowers rather than concentrated in a few.

The segment mix of loans is more even than the deposits. Average loans in 2025 were $322,052 million in Consumer Banking and Lending, $293,089 million in Corporate and Investment Banking, $223,399 million in Commercial Banking and $86,019 million in Wealth and Investment Management8. The households lend the bank its money; the companies borrow most of it.

Everything on this page rests on that 57%. If it fell toward half while wholesale balances grew, the franchise would be relying more on customers who move money quickly.
