A Fifth of the Branches GoneNarrow moat
Wells Fargo (WFC) — moat facet
Wells Fargo closed a fifth of its branches in six years, and its depositors stayed.
Wells Fargo has been shrinking its branch network steadily and the deposits have not noticed. It had 5,032 retail bank branches at the end of 20201 and 4,079 at the end of June 20262, a reduction of 953, or about 19%3.
The phone replaced a good part of them. Mobile active customers were 29.9 million in 2023, 31.4 million in 2024 and 32.8 million in 20254, and 33.7 million in June 20265, about 13% more than in 20236.
That trade matters because branches are expensive and the moat was never the building. A household that has kept its salary account at Wells Fargo for twenty years does not leave because the nearest branch closed, and the average deposit base was essentially the same in 2025 as in 20237.
The branch count still matters for new customers. A bank with fewer branches must win new accounts through its app, through cards and through employers, and those channels compete with every other bank's.
The pace has slowed. The bank closed 255 branches in 2021 and 287 in 2023, but only 87 in 20258910, and 11 in the first half of 20261112. The easy closures appear to be done.
Branches are only part of the property bill. The bank occupied 61.3 million square feet in 2024, including 4.3 million in India and 1.3 million in the Philippines13.
Each surviving branch now carries more of the franchise. Average deposits per branch rose from about $301 million in 2021 to about $329 million in 2025141516, because branches closed faster than the money left. That is the efficient result, and a fragile one: the branches still open are the ones the bank can least afford to lose. Future closures will therefore test the franchise harder than past ones did.
The branch count has fallen every year in the filings. If the closures continued while average consumer deposits fell, the network would have been cut past the point where it supports the franchise, and that is the pairing to watch.
Branches 5,032 (2020) to 4,079 (June 2026); mobile actives 33.7M.
The channel replacing the branch; a stall while branches kept closing would leave new customers with fewer ways in.
