Wells Fargo (WFC) — the future bets
Wells Fargo's 17-18% return target is higher than anything it has earned in a full year since at least 2015.
Wells Fargo's central promise to its shareholders is a return on tangible common equity of 17% to 18% over the medium term1. It reported 14.6% in 20252, 16.1% in the first half of 2026 and 17.7% in the second quarter3.
The path to the target runs through three levers. Growth after the asset cap adds revenue; average loans were up 12% in the second quarter4. Costs are being held: the bank expects noninterest expense of about $55.7 billion in 20265. And buybacks reduce the equity the return is measured on.
The first two are real improvements in the business. The third is arithmetic.
The target is high for this bank. It exceeds every full-year figure in the filings back to 2015, when the return was 15.17%6.
Return on tangible common equity was 14.5% in the first quarter of 2026 and 17.7% in the second7, which shows how much a single quarter can move.
The target is set on tangible equity, which excludes $24,967 million of goodwill8. On total equity the return was 15.0% in the second quarter9.
The first half shows the distance still to go. Return on tangible common equity was 16.1% in the first half of 2026 against 14.4% a year earlier10, an improvement of 1.7 points11; the top of the target needs about as much again. That was a real change in one year. Another year like it would put the bank inside its target without further help from markets.
The earnings needed are easy to size. At tangible common equity of $139.7 billion12, 17.5% would mean about $24.4 billion a year of net income applicable to common stock13, against $20,285 million in 202514, about a fifth more15. Net income was $6,407 million in the second quarter16; four such quarters would be about $25.6 billion17, enough before preferred dividends.
The full-year 2026 return is the test. At 17% or more the bank will have hit a target it has not reached in a decade; at 15% the plan will need another year.
ROTCE 14.6% (2025), 16.1% (H1 2026), 17.7% (Q2 2026).
Progress to the target; a full year below 15% would put the plan behind.
