⚠ Revenue Flat for a DecadeModerate threat
Wells Fargo (WFC) — threat to the moat
Wells Fargo's revenue was lower in 2025 than in 2015, and its returns improved only by shrinking.
The largest fact behind Wells Fargo's returns is that the business has not grown. Revenue was $86,057 million in 2015 and $83,699 million in 202512. In between it peaked at $88,389 million in 20173 and fell to $74,264 million in 20204.
Some of that was the cap; the bank could not add balance sheet. Some was its own retreat from businesses such as the rail car leasing unit sold on 1 January 20265.
Returns improved anyway because costs fell and the share count shrank. That cannot go on forever.
On the old segment basis the pattern was the same. Community Banking revenue was $46,513 million in 2016 and $46,913 million in 20186, and Wholesale Banking fell from $31,047 million to $28,706 million7.
Both halves stalled. Net interest income was $45,301 million in 2015 and $47,484 million in 2025; noninterest income fell from $40,756 million to $36,215 million89.
Profit did not grow either. Net income was $22,894 million in 201510 and $21,338 million in 202511, so the bank earned less in its best recent year than in the year before the scandal broke.
The mix moved even as the total stood still. Mortgage banking income was $1,152 million in 2025 while investment advisory and other asset-based fees reached $10,498 million12; the bank drifted from lending products toward wealth management without growing overall. Wealth fees are steadier than mortgage income, but they rise and fall with markets rather than with the bank's own growth.
The second quarter of 2026 was the first real break. Revenue was $22,622 million, up 9% on a year earlier1314. Trailing twelve-month revenue of $86,796 million15 is still below 2017; a full year above $88.4 billion would be the first sign that the bank had begun to grow again.
