Wells Fargo (WFC) — moat facet

None of Wells Fargo's rivals has taken its depositors; they compete for everything built on top of them, and there Wells Fargo is behind.

Wells Fargo's annual report names no competitor. It says only: "We face significant and increasing competition in the rapidly evolving financial services industry"1. The rivals that matter are four different kinds of relationship.

Third of the four by market value.

JPMorgan is the bank that kept growing while Wells Fargo was capped. Its deposits were $2,559,320 million at the end of 20252, against Wells Fargo's $1,426,207 million3. Bank of America is the peer Wells Fargo is closest to in size and returns, and in the second quarter of 2026 it earned slightly less on its tangible equity, 17.0% against 17.7%45. The investment banks are rivals Wells Fargo is chasing, with a leveraged finance share of 7.2%6. And the lenders with no branches, from fintech firms to platforms built on digital assets, are rivals the bank names only in general terms.

What these have in common is that none of them has taken Wells Fargo's depositors. The bank's cost of deposits, about 1.52% in 2025, was below JPMorgan's 1.80%78, and the deposit base held through the cap. The competition is for the rest of the business: loans, fees, trading and advice.

Smaller rivals trade on similar terms. US Bancorp, worth $92.43 billion, and PNC, worth $90.01 billion9, are about a third of Wells Fargo's size, and US Bancorp traded at 11.8 times earnings10. Wells Fargo sits between them and the two largest banks in size, and with the regional banks on price.

The rivals all watch the same three numbers: deposit cost, efficiency and return on tangible equity. On the first Wells Fargo leads, on the second it trails and on the third it has caught Bank of America and not JPMorgan. That is the whole competitive position in three figures, and it is why the bank's contest is mostly with itself.

The market ranks the four large banks by what they earn. In September 2026 Wells Fargo traded at 11.9 times earnings, against 14.7 for JPMorgan and 12.9 for Bank of America11. A multiple that rose toward Bank of America's would mean investors had started to believe the return gap was closing.
