Corporate Loans Up a QuarterNarrow moat
Wells Fargo (WFC) — moat facet
Two-thirds of Wells Fargo's post-cap loan growth went to corporate borrowers, not to the households whose deposits fund it.
The second place the new balance sheet went is corporate lending. Corporate and Investment Banking average loans were $359.4 billion in the second quarter of 2026 against $285.9 billion a year earlier, up 26%1. Total average loans rose from $916.7 billion to $1,026.5 billion2.
That makes CIB about two-thirds of the bank's loan growth: $73.5 billion of the $109.8 billion increase3. The rest of the bank, including the consumer lending funded by the cheap deposits, shared the remaining third.
There is a case for this. Large companies were the customers most hurt by the cap, because they needed a lender that could grow with them, and some of them had taken their business elsewhere.
There is also a case against. Corporate loans are competitive, and the margin on them is set by the market rather than by the bank's funding advantage.
The yield is falling as the book grows. The average loan yield across the bank was 5.60% in the second quarter, 35 basis points lower than a year earlier4, partly lower rates and partly the mix of new lending.
The trading business lends too. Markets loans rose to $111.2 billion from $79.0 billion5, about 44% of the CIB loan increase6.
The middle-market business the cap also held back has not shared in the growth. Commercial Banking revenue fell from $13,449 million in 2023 to $11,978 million in 20257, and its treasury management and payments revenue from $6,214 million to $5,000 million8. The new loans are going to the larger clients served by the investment bank. Commercial Banking's lending and leasing revenue slipped too, from $5,314 million to $5,034 million9. The middle market is still waiting for its turn.
Credit is benign so far. Net loan charge-offs were 0.34% of average loans in the second quarter of 2026 against 0.44% a year earlier, and 0.10% in the commercial book10. The commercial charge-off rate is the one to watch: a move toward 0.5% would say the bank had lent its way into the growth.
CIB average loans $285.9bn to $359.4bn in a year.
The corporate lending the new balance sheet funds; growth with rising commercial charge-offs would be growth bought with credit.
