⚠ The New Money Pays InterestModerate threat
Wells Fargo (WFC) — threat to the moat
Wells Fargo's post-cap deposit growth is coming in the interest-bearing kind, not the free kind.
The deposits Wells Fargo is adding now are not the free ones. The average deposit cost rose 8 basis points from the first quarter to 1.51% in the second quarter of 2026, which the bank attributes to "higher interest-bearing deposit balances"1. Average noninterest-bearing deposits were $370,116 million at the end of June 2026 against $365,368 million at the end of 20252, barely changed while total deposits grew by about $75 billion34.
That is what fast growth usually looks like for a bank. Corporate and wholesale money comes quickly and pays a rate; household checking money comes slowly and pays almost nothing.
It does not yet threaten the cost advantage. The quarterly cost was still 1 basis point lower than a year before5.
The pattern shows in the segments too. Corporate and Investment Banking average deposits were $202.4 billion in the second quarter of 2025 and $234.8 billion a year later6, the kind of wholesale balance that is paid close to market rates.
The guidance depends on the mix. The bank expects net interest income outside Markets of about $48 billion in 20267, against $46.7 billion in 20258; if the new deposits cost more than planned, that is the line that will fall short.
The ratio to watch is the quarterly deposit cost against the year before. Two quarters of year-on-year increases would say the price of growth was starting to eat the advantage.
