Home Depot (HD) — moat facet

Home Depot's acquired distributors doubled their sales in a year and earn 2.5% on them, a fifth of the stores' margin.

The Other segment is the business Home Depot bought when its stores stopped growing. It sold $12,717 million in fiscal 2025 and earned $316 million1, 7.7% of the company's sales and 1.5% of its operating income2. In the second quarter of fiscal 2026 it sold $5,055 million, up 62%, and earned $247 million34.

Up 62% in a year, mostly GMS.

What is inside it is SRS Distribution, bought in June 2024, and GMS, bought by SRS in September 202556. SRS is now organised into five lines of business: roofing and building products, interior and construction products, landscape, pool, and HVAC products7, the last added with Mingledorff's in May 20268. It operated over 1,250 locations at the end of fiscal 20259 and over 1,340 SRS locations by August 202610.

Its history is short. SRS cost $18,028 million11; at signing it had a 760-plus branch network across 47 states12. The segment's first, partial year, fiscal 2024, brought $6,406 million of sales13.

It is paid for by contractors, often on credit, in large orders delivered to job sites. Roofing and related products were about 68% of the segment's sales in fiscal 2024 and about 53% in fiscal 202514, and about 39% in the second quarter of fiscal 202615.

Its profitability is low. Operating margin was 3.3% in fiscal 2024 and 2.5% in fiscal 202516, after $398 million of intangible amortisation in fiscal 202517; before amortisation it was 5.6%18. In the first quarter of fiscal 2026 it earned $16 million on $4,002 million of sales19.

Organic growth is modest. Management said SRS organic sales grew by a low single-digit percentage in fiscal 2025 despite a lack of storms, after falling in the fourth quarter as industry shingle shipments dropped 28%20. Most of the 62% growth in the second quarter came from GMS, which contributed $1.4 billion21.

The outlook depends on integration and roofing. The Office of Pro Acceleration is meant to lift both22.

The segment's depreciation shows how asset-light distribution is compared with the stores, and how heavy the acquisition accounting is. Other recorded $715 million of depreciation and amortisation in fiscal 2025, most of it the $398 million of acquired-intangible amortisation23, against $3,344 million for Primary24. The Mingledorff's intangibles alone are being amortised over 21 years25, so that charge will weigh on reported margins long after the integration is finished.

The Office of Pro Acceleration is meant to lift this segment first. It coordinates SRS Distribution with Home Depot Pro, HD Supply and Construction Resources26, and the annual report describes sharing product catalogues, logistics and supply chains between the stores and SRS27. If that works, the segment's margin is where it will show.

This line is thin today. The verdict would change if its operating margin before amortisation reached 8% for a year, which would show Home Depot's purchasing and logistics are making the distributors better than they were alone.
