Sales per Square Foot: Last Seen at $599.92Narrow moat

Home Depot (HD) — moat facet

Home Depot's stores sold $627 a square foot at the 2022 peak and less since, and the fiscal 2025 10-K stopped reporting the number.

For years Home Depot published how much each square foot of store sold, and the series tells the story of the stores better than any other. Total sales per retail square foot were $370.55 in fiscal 20151, $454.82 in fiscal 20192, then jumped to $543.74 in fiscal 2020 and peaked at $627.17 in fiscal 20223. They were $604.55 in fiscal 20234 and $599.92 in fiscal 20245.

A pandemic peak, then the series stopped.

The fiscal 2025 10-K does not report the figure6. The likely reason is arithmetic rather than concealment: total sales now include SRS and GMS, which sell from branches rather than retail floor space, so dividing total sales by store footage would flatter the stores. But the effect is that the one number showing whether the core stores are working harder has gone.

What the old series shows is a pandemic surge that did not fully hold. From fiscal 2019 to fiscal 2022 sales per square foot rose about 38%; by fiscal 2024 they had given back about 4% from the peak7.

A reader can still approximate it. Primary segment net sales were $151,966 million in fiscal 20258 across 244.7 million square feet of stores9, and Primary includes online and HD Supply, so the ratio overstates the stores themselves.

The stores are large and uniform. They average approximately 104,000 square feet of enclosed space with approximately 24,000 more of outside garden10, and total store space was 244.7 million square feet at the end of fiscal 202511. With so little change in the footprint, any change in sales per square foot is a change in how hard the same buildings work.

This is a narrow advantage measured with less light than before. The figure to watch is Primary segment net sales, which fell 0.7% in fiscal 202512; if they keep falling across a store base that is not shrinking, sales per square foot are falling too, published or not.
