Home Depot (HD) — threat to the moat
Goodwill and intangibles are now almost a third of Home Depot's assets, the price of buying growth the stores stopped providing.
Before 2024 Home Depot's balance sheet was mostly stores, stock and cash. At 1 February 2026 goodwill was $22,344 million and other intangible assets $10,329 million1, together $32,673 million, 31.1% of total assets of $105,095 million2.
The accounting is a record of prices paid. SRS, GMS and, in May 2026, Mingledorff's for about $1.1 billion3 were all bought for far more than the value of their branches and inventory. Goodwill rose to $22,899 million by 2 August 20264.
Intangible amortisation is already visible: $607 million in fiscal 2025 against $186 million in fiscal 20235. It is why Home Depot now reports adjusted earnings per share, $14.69 against $14.23 reported in fiscal 20256.
The balance sheet has grown to carry it. Total assets were $76,530 million at the end of fiscal 2023 and $105,095 million at the end of fiscal 202578, and $109,384 million by August 20269. Most of the increase is goodwill, intangibles and the inventory of the businesses bought.
Goodwill matters only if the businesses disappoint. An impairment of any of it would be the clearest admission that the Pro acquisitions were overpriced; until then the number to track is the Other segment's operating income before amortisation, $714 million in fiscal 202510.
