Home Depot (HD) — threat to the moat

Home Depot's capital base grew 38% in two years while its after-tax operating profit fell.

Home Depot's invested capital is growing faster than its profit. Average debt and equity rose 38% between fiscal 2023 and fiscal 2025, from $44,955 million to $61,914 million, while NOPAT fell from $16,484 million to $15,897 million12.

Up 38% in two years.

Equity is rising because retained earnings are no longer spent on buybacks: stockholders' equity went from $1,044 million at the end of fiscal 2023 to $12,813 million at the end of fiscal 202534 and $16,617 million by August 20265. Goodwill and intangibles add $32,673 million of capital that earns only what the acquired businesses earn6.

A rising denominator is not a failure if it buys growth. The question is whether the $23.1 billion of purchase consideration for SRS and GMS7 earns its keep.

Long-term debt moved in the same direction. It was $42,743 million excluding current instalments at the end of fiscal 2023 and $46,341 million at the end of fiscal 202589, with commercial paper added on top. Both parts of the denominator Home Depot uses for its ROIC grew.

The measure is Home Depot's reported ROIC after buybacks resume. If it keeps falling even once equity stops accumulating, the capital was spent on returns below the company's own history.
