⚠ Four Pro Businesses and an Absent Chief ExecutiveModerate threat

Home Depot (HD) — threat to the moat

Home Depot's four Pro businesses are being joined up by a CFO who is also standing in for a chief executive on medical leave.

The Pro strategy now depends on making four businesses act as one. On 30 July 2026 Home Depot gave its chief financial officer, Richard McPhail, responsibility for an Office of Pro Acceleration coordinating Home Depot Pro, HD Supply, SRS Distribution and Construction Resources1.

Three weeks that reshaped the top.

Two weeks later the chief executive, Ted Decker, took a temporary medical leave; the company said it expects Decker to return within the next few months2. Ann-Marie Campbell oversees day-to-day operations, and McPhail oversees financial management and the Pro subsidiaries3, and was named interim principal executive officer4.

That places the company's largest strategic bet with an executive who is also running finance and standing in for the chief executive. The company describes the two as long-time executives who have worked together for more than 20 years5.

The reorganisation went beyond the Pro. On the same day, the merchandising chief Billy Bastek took on private brands and the head of interconnected retail took responsibility for loyalty, credit services and payments6. Three executives each received $500,000 of restricted stock on 20 August 20267, while the company's statement said Decker was expected to return within the next few months8.

The risk is execution. The sign to watch is Other segment margin in the second half of fiscal 2026; if it falls below the prior year while leadership is stretched, the integration is slipping.
