Ticket, Not TrafficNarrow moat
Home Depot (HD) — moat facet
Home Depot has raised its basket 54% in ten years without losing customers, but its operating margin has still fallen three years running.
Home Depot's pricing power is real and shows in a single comparison. Over ten years its average ticket rose 54%, from $58.77 to $90.56, while customer transactions rose 7%123. Through the housing freeze its gross margin held at 33.4%, 33.4% and 33.3%4. A retailer that can raise prices through a shortage, hold margin through a slump and lose almost no customers to cheaper rivals has something more than a location.
What supports it is breadth and trust. The stores carry 30,000 to 40,000 items5, sixteen departments of which none is above 8.5% of sales67, and a Pro can buy most of a job in one trip. The merchandising chief said fourth-quarter ticket growth primarily reflected some price increases8, and customers paid them.
The limit is that price has been doing all the work. Comparable sales fell 3.2% in fiscal 2023 and 1.8% in fiscal 2024 and rose 0.3% in fiscal 20259; operating margin fell from 14.2% to 12.7% over the same years10 as selling, general and administrative costs grew faster than sales. Pricing power that holds the gross margin but not the operating margin is not enough by itself.
The breadth of the recovery in the second quarter of fiscal 2026 matters. The 10-Q lists thirteen departments with positive comparable sales, from Storage & Organization and Electrical to Flooring and Millwork11, and foreign exchange added about 25 basis points to comparable sales12. Even so, the gain came from ticket, not traffic.
The stores' pricing also has a ceiling set by the Pro. Contractors compare prices across supply houses and the stores daily, and the 10-K says they look for competitive credit and pricing options13. The homeowner may pay a little more for convenience; the Pro buying a truckload will not.
The advantage is narrow and stable. Operating margin is what to watch: guided to 12.4% to 12.6% for fiscal 202614, a result below 12.4% would mean the cost of running the stores is rising faster than the company can raise prices.
Gross margin flat; operating margin 14.2% to 12.7%.
Price and traffic together; a return below zero while prices rise would mean customers are pushing back.
