Penske Automotive: A 20% Stake Since 2001Narrow moat

Mitsui & Co. (8031) — moat facet

Mitsui has owned a fifth of Penske's car dealerships for twenty-five years and now wants more of them.

Mitsui invested in Penske Automotive Group in February 20011. It owns 20.3%2, Penske Corporation about 52.0% and the public about 27.8%3. The group had sales of $31,809 million in its latest year4, and Mitsui's share of its profit was ¥30.0 billion, ¥27.9 billion and ¥27.1 billion over the last three years5.

Steady, slightly lower, and about to get bigger.

A car dealer earns from new and used cars, finance and, most steadily, from servicing. For Mitsui the stake brings a large, cash-generative American retail business run by an operator it has worked with for decades.

In July 2026 Mitsui and Penske Corporation proposed to buy the public shares at $210 each, valuing the group at $13.8 billion; the partners would pay about $3.8 billion for the float6. That proposal is covered on its own page among the future bets.

Penske Automotive's scale is large relative to Mitsui's other consumer-facing businesses: sales of $31,809 million7 compare with Mitsui's entire Lifestyle segment revenue of ¥3,409.6 billion8. Mitsui's 20.3% share of its profit, ¥27.1 billion9, is similar to its share of IHH Healthcare's.

The measure is the contribution. It has drifted from ¥30.0 billion to ¥27.1 billion10; the take-private would raise Mitsui's share and its exposure together.

Moat trajectory: Holding steady

Contribution drifted down slightly; the take-private proposal would raise the stake.
