⚠ Returns Compete With a ¥2.4 Trillion PlanModerate threat
Mitsui & Co. (8031) — threat to the moat
Mitsui has promised shareholders half its cash flow and has plans to invest more than the other half.
Mitsui's base case for what it calls the Management Allocation, the investment it expects to make over the current three-year plan, is approximately ¥2.4 trillion1. At the same time it has committed to return over 50% of core operating cash flow to shareholders2.
Core operating cash flow was ¥978.9 billion in the latest year3, and the plan targets ¥1.2 trillion by the year to March 20294. Half of three years of that is roughly ¥1.6 trillion; add ¥2.4 trillion of investment and the total is well above the cash the business generates, before asset sales.
The gap is closed by recycling and borrowing. Net debt rose to ¥4,416.7 billion in the first quarter5.
The measure is the net debt-to-equity ratio. Mitsui's was 0.49 in June 20266; a rise toward 0.6, where it was in March 20227, would show the balance sheet funding both commitments.
