Brazil's Gas DistributorsNarrow moat

Mitsui & Co. (8031) — moat facet

Mitsui distributes a quarter of Brazil's gas under state concessions.

Mitsui's gas distribution companies in Brazil supply approximately 25% of the country's gas demand across twelve states1. Together with its gas infrastructure in Mexico and the United States, the business contributed ¥18.2 billion, ¥17.5 billion and ¥17.7 billion over three years2.

About as steady as a business can be.

Gas distribution is a regulated local monopoly: each distributor has a concession for a state, and tariffs are set by a regulator to allow a return on the network. That makes it one of the steadiest businesses in the portfolio, as the three-year figures show.

It also ties Mitsui to Brazil, where it has been an investor since the iron ore partnership of 19713. The currency and the regulator are the main risks.

Brazil is one of Mitsui's largest single-country exposures outside Japan. Besides gas distribution, it includes the Vale stake, whose dividend was ¥43.5 billion4. A weaker real affects both, the distributors through translation and Vale through its dollar-priced iron ore.

The measure is the contribution in yen. Its steadiness through Brazilian currency swings would show the concessions' tariff adjustments working.

Moat trajectory: Holding steady

The contribution has held near ¥18 billion for three years.
