⚠ Henry Hub Moves Both WaysModerate threat
Mitsui & Co. (8031) — threat to the moat
Mitsui's American gas earnings nearly quadrupled in a year and could fall as fast.
Mitsui's US gas business earns more when American gas prices rise. The company's net sensitivity is ¥1.2 billion for each ten cents per million British thermal units1, against an assumption of $3.50 for the current year and $3.63 in the last2.
A dollar move in the gas price, which is common, is therefore about ¥12 billion of profit3. Mitsui E&P USA's contribution jumped from ¥9.8 billion to ¥36.4 billion in one year4; the next move could go the other way.
The company also impaired its South Texas oil and gas business by ¥12.3 billion in the year to March 20245.
The company's assumptions for the current year are a dollar at ¥150.00 against ¥151.09 in the latest year, and a Japanese crude cocktail price of $84 a barrel against $716. A weaker yen and a higher oil price both raise profit; the US gas price is the one assumption set lower than last year.
The measure is the US gas price against the $3.50 assumption. A sustained price below it would reverse much of the latest year's gain.
