◆ What the Market Isn't Pricing In

Applied Materials (AMAT) — the variant view

Applied is the cheapest of the four largest toolmakers on earnings, even as its service backlog grows and its China exposure falls.

The market prices Applied as the least attractive of the large equipment makers. Its trailing P/E of 40.91 compares with 52.7 for KLA, 57.7 for Lam Research and 53.8 for ASML2. Lam is now worth more3.

Value of $100 invested, October 2020 to October 2025 ($)392Applied Materials314PHLX Semiconductor211S&P 500Applied Materials Form 10-K FY2025 performance graph
Nearly four times the money in five years.

The reasons are visible: a quarter of revenue from China, an export settlement, and two anonymous customers taking a third of sales. What the discount may underweight is how the business has changed underneath.

First, the order book is steadier. The services backlog passed the systems backlog at October 2025, $7,141 million against $7,105 million4, and services are moving to subscriptions5.

Second, margins are rising in a way that looks structural. The gross margin has widened for 13 consecutive quarters6, to 50.3%, and the systems segment earned 37.7% in the quarter to July7.

Third, China's weight is already falling. From 37.2% of revenue in fiscal 20248, it was 28% in the latest quarter9, while the United States doubled10. The risk the discount prices is shrinking.

Owners have done well regardless: $100 invested at October 2020 was worth $392.09 at October 2025, against $211.12 in the S&P 50011.

The balance sheet also argues against a large discount. Interest coverage was 34.76 times and debt to equity 0.29 in September 202612, and net cash was about $2,689 million in July13. Applied is not the stretched company its multiple relative to peers might suggest; its discount looks more like a judgment about politics than about finances.

Short sellers are not betting against it either. Short interest was 1.97% of shares in September 202614. The discount to peers is a judgment made by long investors choosing between toolmakers, not a bet that Applied will fail.

The discount could be right if the cycle turns. The figure that would settle it is the gap in P/E against Lam; if Applied's services and falling China share do not narrow it through a downturn, the market was right to discount the breadth.
