⚠ Strategic Stakes Swing the EarningsLow threat

Applied Materials (AMAT) — threat to the moat

Applied's equity stakes added $949 million to nine months of profit and then took $220 million out of one quarter.

Part of Applied's reported profit comes from the value of shares it owns in other companies. Unrealized gains on strategic investments added $949 million in the first nine months of fiscal 20261, but a $220 million unrealized loss hit the quarter to July2, and interest and other income swung to a loss of $100 million from a gain of $396 million a year earlier3.

Investment gains lifted GAAP above adjusted.

The largest holding is a 9% stake in BE Semiconductor Industries4, discussed under Competitors. Publicly traded equity securities were worth $1,979 million against a cost of $965 million at July 20265.

These marks make GAAP earnings noisier. In the second quarter of fiscal 2026 GAAP earnings per share of $3.51 exceeded the adjusted $2.86 because of investment gains6.

The marks were large in fiscal 2025 as well: an unrealized gain on strategic investments of $755 million7. With the $949 million of the first nine months of fiscal 2026, the portfolio added about $1,704 million to reported pretax income in under two years8 without a single machine being sold.

The swings are not the business. The check is to compare GAAP with non-GAAP earnings each quarter; if the gap stays above 10% in either direction, the portfolio is distorting the picture of the moat.
