Net Cash of $2.7 BillionNarrow moat

Applied Materials (AMAT) — moat facet

Applied has more cash than debt, which lets it keep spending on research when customers stop buying.

Applied carries debt but more than covers it. At 26 July 2026 it held cash of $7,037 million and short-term investments of $2,196 million, against short-term debt of $1,299 million and long-term debt of $5,245 million1. That is net cash of about $2,689 million2, before $5,268 million of long-term investments3.

Net cash, excluding long-term investments ($M)3,212Oct 20242,018Oct 20252,689Jul 2026Applied Materials FY2025 release, Form 10-K FY2024 and Q3 FY2026 10-Q; calculated
More cash than debt throughout.

The position has held through the buybacks. Net cash was $2,018 million at October 2025 and $3,212 million at October 20244. Total equity was $25,626 million at July 20265.

This matters for a cyclical company because it allows research and buybacks to continue in a downturn. Applied kept research rising in fiscal 20196, which a borrower in trouble could not have done.

The debt is long and cheap by recent standards. In September 2025 it issued $550 million of notes at 4.000% due 2031 and $450 million at 4.600% due 2036, and repaid $700 million of 3.900% notes7.

Liquidity beyond the cash is ample. Applied has a commercial paper programme and a $2.0 billion revolving credit facility8, and its interest coverage was 34.76 times in September 20269. The balance sheet could absorb a year of losses without borrowing heavily, though Applied has not had a loss year in the period covered here10.

The long-term investments add another layer of safety. Applied held $5,268 million of them at July 202611, not counted in the net cash figure. Together with net cash, that is almost $8 billion of financial assets12 against a company that has not recorded a loss year in the period covered here.

A net cash balance sheet is part of what lets Applied act counter-cyclically. The number to follow is net cash: a move into net debt to fund buybacks would give up that freedom for a better earnings-per-share figure.

Cash plus short-term investments less all debt; a move to net debt would reduce the freedom to invest in a downturn.
