Semiconductor SystemsWide moat
Applied Materials (AMAT) — moat facet
Applied's machine business sells $20.8 billion a year and keeps about 35 cents of each dollar as operating profit.
Semiconductor Systems is Applied Materials in most people's minds, and in the accounts it is nearly three-quarters of the company. It had revenue of $20,798 million in fiscal 2025, 73.3% of the total12, and operating income of $7,379 million3. In the quarter to July 2026, on the new segment basis, it sold $7,040 million, up 26.5%45.
What is inside is the equipment that changes a wafer layer by layer. The 10-K lists "etch, rapid thermal processing, deposition, chemical mechanical planarization, metrology and inspection, wafer packaging, and ion implantation"6. The product names are old and familiar to chipmakers: Centura, Endura and Producer for deposition and etch, VIISta for implantation, SEMVision and VeritySEM for inspection. Implantation came with Varian in 20117.
The customers are chipmakers of three kinds. Foundry, logic and other took 67% of the segment's revenue in fiscal 2025, DRAM 26% and flash 7%8. The mix swings with the memory cycle: flash was 21% in fiscal 20219 and 4% in 202410.
How it is paid is simple. Revenue is recognised when a tool is delivered and accepted: "Semiconductor Systems revenue is recognized at a point in time"11. That is why the segment's revenue follows customers' capital budgets closely, and why its backlog matters. The systems backlog was $7,105 million at October 2025, down from $12,691 million three years earlier1213.
It is highly profitable. The segment's gross margin was 52.0% in fiscal 2023, 52.9% in 2024 and 54.2% in 202514, and its operating margin 34.9%, 35.1% and 35.5%15, after carrying $3,042 million of the company's research budget16. In the third quarter of fiscal 2026 the operating margin was 37.7%17; in the first it was 27.8%, held down by the $253 million export settlement booked in this segment1819.
Growth has been strong and uneven. Revenue was $11,367 million in fiscal 2020, $16,286 million in 2021, $18,797 million in 2022, $19,698 million in 2023 and $19,911 million in 20242021, about 12.8% a year over five years22. The two flat years, 2023 and 2024, were the memory downturn; the growth came back in fiscal 2026. Figures before fiscal 2023 are as reported then; fiscal 2022 segment profit was later restated23.
The segment boundaries have just moved. From fiscal 2026 the 200mm equipment business counts here rather than in services, and corporate costs are fully allocated24. On that basis revenue for the first nine months was $18,146 million against a recast $16,562 million25, up 9.6%26.
The outlook is the strongest in years: Applied expected systems revenue to grow "more than 30 percent in calendar 2026"27 and has raised that since28.
The segment carries most of the company's goodwill as well as its profit: $2,476 million of goodwill at the end of fiscal 2025, against $1,032 million for services29. Its own capital spending was modest, $507 million in fiscal 202530, because the heavy spending on the new research centre sits in corporate. The machines earn well on the capital directly attached to them.
The first quarter of fiscal 2026 was the segment's reminder of the cycle. Revenue fell to $5,141 million from a recast $5,597 million a year earlier, and operating income to $1,427 million31. Two quarters later it sold $7,040 million. A line that can move by 37% in six months, from $5,141 million to $7,040 million32, is not one to value on a single quarter.
This line is where the moat earns its return. Its operating margin through the next downturn is what would change the verdict: above 25% in a year of falling revenue would prove the breadth holds pricing, and below 20% would say it does not.
Revenue +26.5% and margin 37.7% in Q3 FY2026.
The machine business's profit; a fall while revenue grows would mean pricing pressure in the steps.
