Applied Materials (AMAT) — threat to the moat

Almost a third of Applied's backlog is more than a year from becoming revenue.

Applied's backlog looks large, but a good part of it is distant. About 31% of the $15,002 million at October 2025 is "not reasonably expected to be filled within the next 12 months"1. The proportion was about 31% a year earlier and about 30% the year before23.

Services and systems now hold equal halves.

For services this is a strength: long contracts are the point of the subscription model. For machines it is a risk, because a delivery scheduled beyond a year can be moved.

The backlog is also split between segments in a way that has reversed. Services were 48% of the total and systems 47% at October 20254.

Contract liabilities give a partial view in the meantime. Money customers had paid in advance was $2,975 million at October 2023, $2,849 million at October 2024 and $2,566 million at October 202556, then $3,271 million at July 20267. The turn upward in 2026 suggests orders are being placed with deposits again.

The long-dated part is also where the 10-K's warning bites. Customers may delay or cancel orders before shipment, subject to penalties8, and the further away the delivery, the more room there is to change plans.

The share beyond twelve months is the number to track in the next 10-K. If it rises well above a third while the total falls, customers are pushing machine deliveries out rather than signing longer service terms.
