ASML: The Step Applied Does Not SellWide moat
Applied Materials (AMAT) — moat facet
ASML sells the one step Applied does not, so every lithography tool it sells creates work for Applied's machines.
The largest equipment company is not Applied's competitor in any step Applied sells. ASML led the industry in 2025 with $27.5 billion of revenue, according to TechInsights1, and was worth $662.45 billion on 24 September 20262. Its business is lithography, which is not on the list of steps Applied's machines serve3.
That makes ASML a complement. Every wafer that passes through a lithography tool must also be deposited on, etched and cleaned, and those steps are Applied's. When chipmakers buy more lithography capacity, they generally buy more of the surrounding tools as well.
The relationship has a competitive edge only in the budget. A chipmaker's capital spending is fixed in any year, and a larger share going to lithography leaves less for everything else. Applied's argument, in its own words, is that its materials engineering is at "the foundation of virtually every new semiconductor"4, meaning the steps around lithography keep multiplying.
ASML's market value is 1.8 times Applied's5, which says how the market values the one irreplaceable step against the many contested ones.
The complementarity shows in Applied's own growth. When chipmakers built out capacity in fiscal 2021, Applied's systems revenue rose to $16,286 million from $11,367 million6, and every factory that needed lithography needed the surrounding steps too. ASML's size is a measure of how large Applied's opportunity is, not how much of it has been taken.
The two companies also share the same customers and the same political risk. China restrictions reach lithography as well as deposition and etch, and both depend on the same few leading-edge chipmakers. A shock to those customers would hit both at once, which is why the relationship is complementary rather than protective.
For Applied, ASML's growth is a leading indicator. If chipmakers keep buying lithography while Applied's systems revenue falls, the budget will have shifted away from Applied's steps.
Complementary steps; budget competition only.
The complementary step's size; ASML growing while Applied's systems revenue falls would mean budgets shifting away.
