◆ Inside the Latest Quarter (Q3 FY2026)

Applied Materials (AMAT) — the variant view

Applied reported its best quarter ever, up 25%, and its shares fell 5% because it would not put a number on what comes next.

Applied's quarter to 26 July 2026 was the best in its history. Revenue was a record $9,115 million, "up 25 percent year over year"1, and 15.2% above the previous quarter2; the chief executive called it "the highest sequential revenue growth in the company’s history"3.

Profit grew almost twice as fast as revenue.

Profit rose faster. The gross margin was 50.3% and operating income a record $3,075 million, 33.7% of revenue45. Net income was $2,538 million, up 43%, and non-GAAP earnings per share $3.50, up 41%6.

Both segments grew. Semiconductor Systems revenue was $7,040 million, up 26.5%, with an operating margin of 37.7%; Applied Global Services $1,781 million, up 21.7%78. Foundry and logic took 67% of systems revenue9.

Cash came back after a weak second quarter. Operating cash flow was a record $3,037 million, and Applied returned $860 million through $440 million of buybacks and $420 million of dividends10. An unrealized loss of $220 million on strategic investments held back GAAP earnings11.

The market was unimpressed. The shares fell about 5% after hours12, from $534.54 to $507.18 the next day13, because the company raised its outlook without a number14.

The nine months to July put the quarter in context. Revenue was $24,037 million, up 11%, net income $7,370 million and non-GAAP earnings per share $8.7315. Applied spent $1,988 million on capital projects, $1,177 million on buybacks and $1,150 million on dividends in those nine months16. The second half of the fiscal year is carrying the growth: the first quarter's revenue, $7,012 million, was down 2%17.

The quarter's cash returns were modest for a record. Applied distributed $860 million18, about 28% of the quarter's operating cash flow19, and kept building its balance sheet. Total assets reached $43,522 million20. The company is holding cash for capacity rather than returning it, which fits its view that demand runs into 2027.

The quarter shows a business running at full capacity. The fourth-quarter guidance of $10,250 million21 is what to hold it to; revenue at the bottom of the range would say the peak was this quarter.
