Applied Materials (AMAT) — threat to the moat

Applied kept raising research spending when revenue fell 12.6% in 2019, and its research bill is now $3.6 billion.

Keeping research steady through a downturn protects the future and hurts the present. When revenue fell 12.6% in fiscal 20191, research rose2 and net income fell to $2,706 million from $3,038 million3.

Revenue fell and research still rose.

The budget is much larger now: $3,570 million in fiscal 20254. If revenue fell by the 2019 percentage, the research bill would take a larger share of what was left.

Applied has shown it will cut people when it must. In October 2025 it announced a reduction of about 4% of its workforce, with charges of "approximately $160 million to $180 million"5.

The fixed nature of the budget is visible in the quarterly figures. Research, development and engineering was $858 million in the fourth quarter of fiscal 2024 and $917 million in the fourth quarter of 20256, up about 7%7. A downturn would reach the income statement through that line.

The 2019 experience also shows what the fixed budget buys. Revenue recovered to $17,202 million in fiscal 2020 and $23,063 million in 20218, and research spending had been kept intact through the dip. The tools that sold in the recovery were developed during the downturn.

The test in the next downturn is whether research is cut. A reduction in research spending while revenue falls would protect earnings at the cost of the steps that justify the margin.
