$6.4 Billion of Services and SparesWide moat
Applied Materials (AMAT) — moat facet
Applied's installed fleet pays it $6.4 billion a year in spares, upgrades and service, and that figure has not fallen in five years.
Every machine Applied sells becomes a customer for spares, upgrades and service for as long as it runs. Applied Global Services turned that into $6,385 million of revenue in fiscal 2025, up from $5,732 million in 20231, and $1,792 million of operating income2, a 28.1% margin3.
The segment sells more than repairs. The 10-K lists "spares, upgrades, services, 200 millimeter and other equipment and factory automation software"4. Upgrades are the quiet part: a customer that wants more output from an existing tool can buy a kit from Applied rather than a new machine, and the kit only fits Applied's own tool.
The service line has grown every year for five years, from $4,155 million in fiscal 20205 to $6,385 million in 20256, about 9% a year7. That is slower than the machines grew, but it did not fall in any year, including those in which chipmakers cut their equipment budgets.
On the new segment basis for fiscal 2026, which moved 200mm equipment out, services earned $536 million on $1,781 million in the quarter to July, up 21.7% on a year earlier89.
Services earned half the company's research budget. The segment's operating income, $1,792 million in fiscal 202510, covered half of Applied's research spending of $3,570 million11. In a downturn, that profit is what keeps the research running while machine sales fall.
Services have grown faster than the company when the company slowed. In fiscal 2024, when total revenue grew 2.5%12, services grew from $5,732 million to $6,225 million13, about 8.6%14. The annuity grows when customers keep old tools running instead of buying new ones.
The services business is the annuity under a cyclical company. What would weaken it is a year of falling service revenue while the installed fleet keeps running; the latest quarter's growth of 21.7% is the figure to hold it against.
Services revenue up every year FY2020-FY2025; +21.7% in Q3 FY2026.
The annuity on the installed fleet; a year of decline would mean customers are servicing tools elsewhere.
