⚠ A Record Cycle at 40 Times EarningsModerate threat
Applied Materials (AMAT) — threat to the moat
Applied trades at 40 times earnings near the top of a record equipment cycle, after falling a third from its June high.
Applied's shares now assume the boom continues. At $474.25 on 24 September 2026 the company was worth $376.36 billion1, about 40.6 times trailing earnings and 12.2 times trailing revenue2. At the end of fiscal 2023 the multiple was 16.023.
The price has already shown how fast sentiment can turn. The highest close was $723.00 on 30 June 20264; the shares are about 34.4% below it5. After the record third quarter they fell from $534.54 to $507.18 in a day6.
The business is cyclical, and the last down year was not long ago: revenue fell 12.6% in fiscal 20197. Applied gives guidance one quarter at a time8, so investors have no longer view from the company.
The multiple leaves little room. Forward earnings put it at 26.95 times9, which assumes the fourth quarter's non-GAAP earnings of about $4.02 a share10 are sustained and grown.
The price has already shown how violent the swings can be. In the last days of July 2026 the shares fell 3.61%, 7.82% and 8.40% on consecutive days, then rose 14.97%11. The 52-week range was $196.20 to $739.6712. A stock with a beta of 1.6013 moves further than the market in both directions, and a turn in the equipment cycle would be felt first in the price.
Other valuation measures say the same. Enterprise value was 36.88 times EBITDA and the shares 14.69 times book value in September 202614. At the end of fiscal 2022, the last trough, the price-to-sales ratio was 2.9915; it was 12.20 in September 202616. The difference is the market's confidence that this cycle is different.
The threat is not that Applied is a poor business but that the price assumes too good a year. What to watch is the forward multiple: if earnings fall and the stock does not, the market will be paying well over 30 times trough profits.
What the market pays for peak earnings; a multiple held above 30 while earnings fall would mean paying up for a trough.
