XTB (XTB) — threat to the moat
A licence fee falls when volumes fall and a payroll does not, which is why 2019's 17 per cent revenue decline became a 44 per cent profit decline.
The alternative to licensing software is employing the people who write it, and that bill is now 413 million złoty a year and rising faster than revenue.
Polish technology wages have risen sharply and the competition for the relevant engineers is not other brokers. It is the global technology employers hiring remotely into Warsaw and Wroclaw, on budgets that treat a whole Polish payroll as a rounding error. XTB added 271 people in 2025 and another 32 in the first half of 2026, and the market it draws them from is the same one every software business in Central Europe is drawing on.1
There is a concentration issue inside that. A proprietary trading platform, a market-making risk system and a mobile application shared across fifteen countries are all maintained by one organisation of 1 516 people, in which the number who genuinely understand the pricing engine is a small fraction.2 That knowledge is not documented in any filing and is not replaceable on a schedule.
Set against the alternative the trade still looks right — a licence fee scales with volume and a payroll does not, so the software cost of the fifteenth country is close to zero. But the fixed cost is fixed in both directions. In a year like 2019, when operating income fell 17 per cent after a rule change, the payroll does not fall with it, and the operating profit fell 44 per cent instead.3
Revenue per employee was 1,54 million złoty in 2023, 1,51 in 2024 and 1,42 in 2025.4 Two consecutive falls, because headcount is growing faster than revenue does.
