The Platform It Built Instead of RentingNarrow moat
XTB (XTB) — moat facet
Ninety-one per cent of the trading runs on software XTB owns, which buys speed and independence and does not stop anybody following.
Most brokers of XTB's size run somebody else's software. The industry standard for two decades has been MetaTrader, licensed from a third party, which is why so many trading platforms look identical and why switching brokers costs a client nothing beyond opening the account.1
XTB built its own. xStation and the XTB mobile app are proprietary, developed in Warsaw, and the disclosure that matters is how much of the business actually runs on them: in the second quarter of 2026, 30 per cent of contract-for-difference turnover went through xStation on the desktop, 61 per cent through xStation Mobile, and 9 per cent through MetaTrader 4.2 Ninety-one per cent of the trading is on software XTB owns.3
The advantage is not that the software is better, which is unverifiable, but that the roadmap belongs to the company. Extended trading hours from half past seven in the morning until ten at night for nearly a thousand European shares and funds, a media-sentiment module, the ability to choose which position to close rather than accept the automatic first-in-first-out rule, retirement accounts managed from the desktop: each of those shipped in the first half of 2026 because XTB decided to ship it.4
The second advantage is the balance sheet. There is no licence fee scaling with volume, and no third party that can change terms.
Follow the platform mix. MetaTrader has held between 6 and 11 per cent of turnover for two years and shows no sign of going to zero, which is the part of the book that could leave without relearning anything.5
The proprietary platform shipped a Cash ISA, spot cryptocurrency in two jurisdictions, extended European trading hours, a sentiment module and desktop retirement accounts inside six months. Mobile went from 57 per cent of turnover to 61. The capability is compounding; the competitive protection it provides is not.
In the second quarter of 2026, 30 per cent of contract turnover ran on xStation on the desktop, 61 per cent on xStation Mobile and 9 per cent on MetaTrader 4. Owning the code is why a Cash ISA, spot cryptocurrency, extended European trading hours and a sentiment module all shipped inside six months. MetaTrader has held between 6 and 11 per cent for two years, and that residue is the part of the book with nothing holding it.
