XTB (XTB) — threat to the moat

The custody book grew 59 per cent in six months and produced 3,8 per cent of the gross gain; the thesis needs ten.

The central tension in this company is that the two halves of it have opposite properties, and neither has both.

Gross gain on shares and funds, as a share of the CFD figureWACC ~10%0,7%20231,7%20243,8%2025Client instruments over the same period: 13 682m zł in 2024, 27 284m zł in 2025, 43 364m zł now
Tripling every year, and it needs to reach ten for the thesis to work.

The derivative book earns the money: 2 035 million złoty of gross gain in 2025, 96 per cent of the total, from clients who can leave in an afternoon and frequently do.1 The custody book keeps the client: 43 364 million złoty of shares and funds at the end of June 2026, growing 59 per cent in six months, from clients who would need weeks and possibly a tax cost to move.2 It produced 78 million złoty.

An investor is therefore being asked to believe one of two things. Either the custody book eventually earns something — through fees XTB has promised not to charge, through interest, through currency conversion, or by feeding the derivative book — or it is a very expensive way of accumulating other people's property. XTB is currently accumulating it at a marketing cost of about 600 złoty per client and charging nothing for the transactions that create it.

The optimistic case has real support in the trend: gross gain on shares and funds went from 11 million złoty to 31 million to 78 million in three years, more than doubling each year.3 Extrapolate two more years at that rate and it is a genuine business. Extrapolate the derivative book at the current rate and it is still ten times larger.

Put the two side by side: 0,7 per cent in 2023, 1,7 in 2024, 3,8 in 2025.4 For the thesis to work it has to get above ten.
