XTB (XTB) — threat to the moat
Half-year income rose 79,7 per cent on volume down 1,8 per cent - a number with no run rate attached to it.
What XTB actually sells is participation in price movement, and price movement is supplied by the world rather than by the company.
The first half of 2026 was a commodities year.1 Gross gain on commodity contracts was 1 555 million złoty against 380 million a year earlier, a factor of four, while index contracts fell 46 per cent and currencies fell 42 per cent.2 The gross-gain mix went from 46 per cent indices and 33 per cent commodities to 75 per cent commodities and 14 per cent indices in twelve months.3 Nothing XTB did caused that, and nothing it does can repeat it.
The reverse case is on the same page of the same series. The third quarter of 2025 produced 375,8 million złoty of operating income, the worst quarter in two years, on the second-highest contract volume of the year.4 Clients were active and markets were not, and the profit per lot fell to 152 złoty.
This is why the comparison a reader most wants to make is the one least worth making. Half-year operating income rose 79,7 per cent; the number of contracts traded fell 1,8 per cent.5 Growth of that shape has no run rate attached to it, because there is no operating change underneath it that could be expected to continue.
The honest way to read this company is over a full cycle rather than a quarter, and the full-cycle number is the annual one: profitability per lot has been 140, 249, 144, 212, 227, 275 and 215 złoty across 2019 to 2025.6 The middle of that range is where a normal year sits, and the first half of 2026 ran at more than double it.7
