◆ What the Market Isn't Pricing In
Philip Morris International (PM) — the variant view
The market doubled PMI's multiple as IQOS succeeded, and may be underweighting that the next growth must come without buybacks and with the American business shrinking.
📈 PM valuation, revenue & earnings — P/E, P/S, revenue, EPS →The market has already rewarded PMI for its transition. At $190.48 on 25 September 2026 the shares gave a market value of $296.88 billion1, 27.41 times trailing earnings and 21.65 times forward2. At the end of 2018 the same calculation, market value over net earnings, gave about 13 times3. The multiple has doubled while smoke-free revenue went from $4,096 million to $16,854 million45.
Most of that re-rating is deserved. Smoke-free products now earn nearly 43% of gross profit6, and International Smoke-Free earns a higher margin than combustibles7. A company whose growth business is also its most profitable deserves a higher multiple than a cigarette company in managed decline.
What the market may be underweighting are two constraints. First, all earnings growth to 2028 must come from operations: the plan assumes "no share repurchases" and net debt of about $43 billion must come down first89. Second, the American business, which was supposed to be the fastest-growing part of smoke-free, shrank 16.1% in the first half of 202610.
The gap between reported and adjusted earnings is another thing to price. PMI's 2026 guidance is $7.28 to $7.43 of reported diluted earnings per share against $8.35 to $8.50 adjusted11, a difference of about $1.07 a share at the midpoints12, which includes the 33-cent Canadian impairment of the second quarter13.
The market also treats PMI as unusually safe. The shares had a beta of 0.40, traded between $142.11 and $207.76 over the year14, and rose 16.86% in the twelve months to September15. A low-volatility stock at 27 times earnings is priced for reliability as much as for growth.
Cash tells a plainer story. Free cash flow of about $10,664 million in 202516 is a yield of about 3.6% on the market value17, and the dividend yields 3.36%18. For that price the shareholder gets a dividend raised every year since 200819 and growth that must be earned without help. If adjusted earnings per share grow at the 9% to 11% the plan promises, the forward multiple is reasonable; if American weakness keeps growth nearer 7%, the market is paying growth-stock prices for a steady compounder.
