⚠ Snus: The Older Oral Business Is ShrinkingLow threat

Philip Morris International (PM) — threat to the moat

Snus volumes fell 5% in two years, so all of the growth in PMI's oral tobacco business depends on ZYN.

Swedish Match was not only ZYN. It also brought snus, the traditional Scandinavian moist tobacco pouch, and that business is shrinking. PMI shipped 240.4 million cans of snus in 2023, 239.6 million in 2024 and 227.9 million in 20251, a fall of 5.2% over two years2.

Pouches doubled; snus shrank.

All of the growth in PMI's oral business therefore comes from nicotine pouches. Total oral shipments rose from 799.3 million cans in 2023 to 1,240.0 million in 20253, but only because pouches rose from 421.1 million to 879.6 million4.

In the second quarter of 2026 total oral volume fell 1.2%5, with the international business down 7.0%6. The older product is fading faster than the new one is growing outside America.

The decline also shows in the product mix PMI reports. Total nicotine pouch shipments rose from 421.1 million cans in 2023 to 879.6 million in 20257, more than doubling, while snus lost about 12 million cans over the same two years89. The oral business is being carried by one product, and that product is the one whose American shipments fell in the first half of 2026.

This matters because snus was part of what PMI paid for. The number to watch is total oral shipments; a full year of decline would mean the pouch category can no longer carry the snus decline behind it.
