A Dividend Raised Every Year Since 2008Narrow moat

Philip Morris International (PM) — moat facet

PMI has raised its dividend every year since 2008, to $6.40 a share, and the 2026-2028 plan leaves no room for buybacks beside it.

PMI's dividend is the promise that holds its shareholders together. The company has raised it every year since it became independent in 2008; the September 2026 increase, 8.8% to $1.60 a quarter or $6.40 a year, brought the total rise since the spin-off to 248%, a compound rate of 7.2%1. Dividends declared were $5.14 a share in 2023, $5.30 in 2024 and $5.64 in 20252.

Up every year since the spin-off.

The cash involved is large. PMI paid $7,964 million of dividends in 2023, $8,197 million in 2024 and $8,624 million in 20253, about 81% of 2025 free cash flow4. At $190.48 a share the dividend yields about 3.4%56.

The dividend is also a discipline. PMI's 2026 to 2028 targets assume no share repurchases7, and the company describes a "Steadfast commitment to progressive dividend policy"8. Every dollar not spent on the dividend goes to paying down the debt raised for Swedish Match.

A dividend raised through the pandemic, the Canadian settlement and a $16.8 billion acquisition9 says something about the durability of the cash flow behind it. It also says the board regards the increase as close to an obligation.

This is a moat indicator rather than a moat: a business can only raise its payout every year since 2008 if its cash earnings keep rising. Dividends paid as a share of free cash flow is the gauge, about 81% in 202510; a return above 100%, as in 202311, would mean the increase is being borrowed.

Moat trajectory: Holding steady

Raised 8.8% in September 2026.

The payout the cash flow has to support; a rise slower than earnings growth for several years would signal strain.
