Megapolis: $2.8 Billion Through a Part-Owned DistributorThin moat
Philip Morris International (PM) — moat facet
Megapolis, a Russian distributor PMI owns 23% of, bought $2.8 billion of its products in 2025, almost 7% of revenue.
PMI's single largest identifiable revenue relationship is with a company it partly owns. Revenue from related parties was $3,553 million in 2023, $3,876 million in 2024 and $4,582 million in 20251. Most of it came from Megapolis Group, a Russian distributor, at $2,267 million, $2,393 million and $2,805 million2, about 6.9% of 2025 revenue3.
PMI holds 23% of the distributor TKM, carried at $303 million4, and Russia accounted for about 6% of PMI's net revenues in 20255. The relationship grew 17.2% in 20256, faster than PMI as a whole.
The arrangement has already been changed from outside. PMI's filings describe a forced localisation in August 2024 and sanctions on a former co-shareholder of the distributor7. The operational risks of selling in Russia are covered on the Russia page under the Moat; the client risk is that one distributor, in a country run under sanctions, carries almost 7% of revenue.
A related-party distributor also blurs the usual signals. PMI's minority stake means it shares in the distributor's profits, and its sales to the distributor are recorded at arm's length but between connected parties.
The number to watch is Megapolis revenue. Growth faster than PMI's own, as in 2025, increases the concentration in the one customer most exposed to a government decision.
Grew 17.2% in 2025, faster than PMI.
The concentration in the customer most exposed to Russian policy; faster growth than PMI increases it.
