Philip Morris International (PM) — threat to the moat

On the reported basis PMI's American segment earned $322 million in 2025, two years after losing $325 million.

PMI's American segment looks very different on the reported and adjusted bases. Operating companies income was a loss of $325 million in 2023, a profit of $59 million in 2024 and $322 million in 2025 on the reported basis, against $676 million, $1,065 million and $1,124 million adjusted12. The gap of about $800 million to $1 billion a year is made up of special items, largely the amortisation of what PMI paid for Swedish Match.

About $800 million a year of special items.

The adjusted figure is the right guide to the business's cash earnings. The reported one is the right guide to the return on what PMI paid: $322 million is 10.0% of the segment's 2025 revenue3, on a purchase that cost about $16.8 billion.

That matters for how the market values PMI's growth story. The American segment is the fastest-growing part of the company in most years, and on the reported basis it has only just turned profitable.

The measure to watch is reported U.S. operating companies income. When amortisation begins to roll off, it should rise sharply; if it falls instead, the underlying business is shrinking faster than the accounting is easing.
