Demand Above SupplyNarrow moat
Intel (INTC) — moat facet
In 2026 Intel's customers wanted more chips than Intel could make, so it raised prices and let AMD sell the rest.
The strangest fact about Intel's 2026 is that its problem was not demand. The company says market demand exceeded its available product supply in the second quarter, in both its client and data center businesses1. Revenue rose 25% to $16,128 million2, the fastest growth in more than fifteen years according to CNBC3, and the quarter beat the $13.8 billion to $14.8 billion Intel had guided4.
A shortage is good for a franchise's pricing and bad for its share. Intel raised prices sharply, with server selling prices up 48%5, and its gross margin rose to 40.4% from 27.5% a year earlier6. At the same time customers who could not get enough Intel chips bought AMD's.
Part of the shortage is Intel's own capacity. Its older Intel 7 process still made almost half of Client Computing product sales and a majority of data center product sales in 20257, and management raised the 2026 capital spending plan to more than $20 billion to add capacity8.
The shortage also changes customer behaviour. In the first quarter of 2026 Intel entered long-term arrangements with customers that included deposits of $1.7 billion, received in cash in the second quarter9. Customers do not prepay for chips they can get elsewhere.
The shortage has shown up in every quarter of 2026. Revenue was $13,577 million in the first quarter, up 7%10, and $16,128 million in the second11, with the third guided at $15.8 billion to $16.8 billion12. The third-quarter gross margin guidance, 41.0% GAAP and 42.0% non-GAAP13, assumes the pricing holds for at least one more quarter.
For now the franchise is supply-limited rather than demand-limited. The figure that would show the difference is gross margin once new capacity arrives: holding near 40% would mean pricing reflects the product, a fall back toward 30% would mean it reflected the shortage.
Revenue grew 25% in Q2 2026 with prices up and customers prepaying.
Pricing in a shortage; holding near 40% after capacity arrives would mean the product commands it.
