The Hyperscalers' Own ChipsThin moat
Intel (INTC) — moat facet
Amazon, Google, Meta and Microsoft design processors to replace the ones Intel sells them, and Intel is now helping some of them do it.
The largest buyers of server processors no longer have to buy them. Intel's 10-K lists the custom silicon of Amazon, Google, Meta and Microsoft among its data center competitors, and says it also competes with Broadcom in the custom chip development market1. Every in-house processor a cloud company deploys is a server socket Intel does not fill.
Intel's response is to join the business rather than fight it. Its purpose-built silicon, custom chips designed for particular customers, was nearly tripling year over year in the second quarter of 20262. It announced a multiyear collaboration with Google on Xeon processors and a custom infrastructure processing unit3, and custom silicon work with Fortinet4.
The risk is that the most profitable customers take the most profitable work in-house. Intel's 10-K notes that industry changes have increased the significance and purchasing power of certain customers, particularly hyperscalers5.
For now the cloud companies are paying up. Server selling prices rose 48% in the second quarter of 20266, because demand for processors alongside AI systems exceeds supply.
The same companies are also candidates for Intel's foundry. Piper Sandler listed Amazon, Google and Microsoft among the firms evaluating Intel 14A7. A hyperscaler that designs its own chips needs someone to make them, and if Intel can be that someone the loss of server sockets becomes foundry revenue.
The balance will be visible when Intel reports custom silicon as a line of its own. Growth in that business faster than the server share it loses would say Intel has found a place in the hyperscalers' plans; the reverse would say it is being designed out.
Custom silicon nearly tripled in Q2 2026; hyperscaler purchasing power keeps rising.
Intel's server sales while its biggest customers build their own; growth held after the shortage would show it is not being designed out.
