⚠ Insurance Will Not Cover It AllLow threat
CrowdStrike (CRWD) — threat to the moat
CrowdStrike says its insurance will not cover all the outage costs, and the Delta claim is the largest unreserved exposure.
CrowdStrike states plainly that its insurance has limits: "we expect that our insurance coverage will not cover all costs, claims and liabilities actually incurred"1 in connection with the July 2024 incident.
So far the uninsured bill has been manageable. Net incident costs were $60.1 million in fiscal 2025 and $117.7 million in fiscal 20262, against free cash flow of $1,235.3 million in fiscal 20263. The second quarter of fiscal 2027 brought a $14.5 million net recovery4.
The largest open exposure is Delta, reported at about $500 million5, with no reserve disclosed.
The figure to watch is any reserve or settlement for Delta. A charge above $250 million would be about a fifth of a year's free cash flow6, not fatal, but large enough to show that the insurance gap is a real cost to shareholders.
