CrowdStrike (CRWD) — threat to the moat
CrowdStrike's 78% subscription margin is the room rivals would use to undercut it, and the company warns it may have to respond.
CrowdStrike's gross margin is high enough that any competitor with a bundle has room to undercut it, and the company says so. Its risk factors warn that "Competitive pricing pressure may reduce our gross profits and adversely affect our financial results"1.
The margin being defended is 78% on subscriptions under GAAP and 81% on the non-GAAP basis2. The rivals listed in the 10-K include network security vendors and cloud security vendors3, companies that can include endpoint or cloud protection in something a customer already pays for.
The evidence so far is that the margin has held. GAAP subscription gross margin was 78% in both fiscal 2025 and fiscal 20264, and 78% again in the latest quarter5, through a period that included the discounts in the customer commitment packages after July 2024.
The same risk factor explains where the pressure would come from. The company says many of its competitors have "greater name recognition, longer operating histories, and a larger base of customers than we do"6, which describes rivals that can afford to bundle and wait.
The line to watch is the non-GAAP subscription gross margin, 81% in the latest quarter7. A fall of two points or more, without an acquisition to explain it, would mean the platform is being defended on price.
