Non-Cancelable, One to Three YearsNarrow moat

CrowdStrike (CRWD) — moat facet

CrowdStrike's customers sign non-cancelable contracts of up to three years and pay ahead, which bought the company time after July 2024.

The contracts underneath CrowdStrike's cash flow are simple. Subscriptions have "a typical term of one to three years", and "most subscription contracts are non-cancelable"1. Customers are usually billed in advance, which is why deferred revenue, cash received for service not yet delivered, was $4,842.2 million at 31 July 20262, of which $1,345.1 million is due beyond twelve months3.

Just over a quarter pays for service more than a year away.

Non-cancelable terms convert switching cost into contract law. A customer that grows unhappy mid-contract still pays until renewal, which gives CrowdStrike time to fix problems before the customer can leave. That was worth a great deal after July 2024: customers could not walk away the next morning, and CrowdStrike had until each renewal to win them back.

The noncurrent part of deferred revenue, paid for service more than a year away, is the clearest sign of multi-year commitment. It was $1,332.4 million at January 20264 and $1,345.1 million six months later5, against current deferred revenue of $3,497.1 million6.

The trade-off is that non-cancelable contracts delay bad news as well as good. A customer that has decided to leave shows up only at renewal, sometimes years later, so the contract structure makes CrowdStrike's figures lag customer sentiment.

Where multi-year contracts are billed in instalments, the part not yet invoiced sits outside the balance sheet entirely. The company calls it backlog, and it was about $5.9 billion at 31 July 20267; the Major Clients pages look at who stands behind it.

Noncurrent deferred revenue is the gauge. At $1,345.1 million it is just over a quarter of deferred revenue8; a fall in that figure while RPO keeps rising would mean customers are signing long contracts but paying for them year by year, weakening the cash advantage.

Moat trajectory: Holding steady

Noncurrent deferred revenue $1,332.4M (Jan 2026) to $1,345.1M (Jul 2026).
