CrowdStrike (CRWD) — moat facet

CrowdStrike's customers pay before they are served and sign contracts they cannot cancel, which is why a company with GAAP losses holds $5 billion of cash.

The cleanest proof of a customer's commitment is money paid before the service is delivered, and CrowdStrike collects a great deal of it. Deferred revenue was $4,842.2 million at 31 July 20261, and remaining performance obligations, all the contracted revenue not yet recognised, were $10.7 billion2, about two years of trailing revenue3.

Two years of revenue already under contract.

That prepayment is why a company with GAAP operating losses generates so much cash. Operating cash flow was $1,612.3 million in fiscal 2026 and free cash flow $1,235.3 million4. Cash stood at $5.01 billion at July 20265, against $750 million of senior notes6.

The contracts are designed to hold. Subscriptions typically run one to three years and most are non-cancelable7. The company has also judged that customers stay longer than it once assumed: from fiscal 2027 it amortises sales commissions over five years instead of four8.

Why this is a moat: advance payment and non-cancelable terms turn switching cost into cash. They also buy time. After July 2024 customers could not leave until renewal, which gave CrowdStrike months to repair relationships.

Why it is only narrow: much of the cash advantage rests on paying staff in stock, $1,096.7 million in fiscal 20269, and the contract book is lengthening, with only 46% of RPO due within a year10. The company's revenue recognition and ARR reporting also drew requests for information from the Department of Justice and the SEC11.

The balance sheet shows how much of the business customers fund. At 31 July 2026 total liabilities were $6,885.5 million12, and the largest part was deferred revenue of $4,842.2 million13, cash paid for service not yet delivered. That prepayment sits beside $5.01 billion of cash14; customers, in effect, finance most of the pile.

Deferred revenue is the plain test of whether customers still pay first. It grew about 27.5% in fiscal 202615, faster than revenue; growth below revenue growth for a full year would mean the prepayment advantage is being traded away, perhaps through the flexible payment terms offered after the outage.

Moat trajectory: Holding steady

Deferred revenue +27.5% in FY2026; RPO $10.7bn, 46% within 12 months.
