CrowdStrike (CRWD) — threat to the moat
CrowdStrike's outage-related costs doubled in the second year, to $117.7 million, even as it won its cases.
Winning lawsuits is expensive. CrowdStrike's net costs associated with the July 2024 incident were $60.1 million in fiscal 2025 and $117.7 million in fiscal 20261, about $181 million in total through July 20262, and that excludes the revenue given up through the customer commitment packages.
The company expects more. It warns that "our insurance coverage will not cover all costs, claims and liabilities actually incurred"3. The quarter's net recovery of $14.5 million4 came from insurance and may not repeat.
With the securities, passenger and derivative suits closed, the remaining large item is Delta's claim, now in discovery5.
The watch point is the fiscal 2027 total. If full-year net costs exceed $50 million after a first half that netted to only $3.6 million6, the Delta case is proving costlier than the dismissals suggested.
