CrowdStrike (CRWD) — threat to the moat

CrowdStrike's post-outage concessions included flexible payment terms, which chip at the prepayment behind its cash flow.

Part of CrowdStrike's cash advantage is that customers pay annually in advance. The customer commitment packages introduced after July 2024 included, among other things, "flexible payment terms or subscription period extensions"1.

Contracts grew faster than prepayments.

Flexible payment usually means paying later or in smaller instalments. That shows up as slower growth in deferred revenue relative to contracted revenue: RPO grew about 38.5% in fiscal 20262, deferred revenue about 27.5%3.

It also shows in the cash margin. Free cash flow fell from about 30.7% of revenue in fiscal 2024 to about 25.7% in fiscal 20264, though higher capital spending contributed.

The unbilled part of the contract book is where instalment billing shows. It was about $2.8 billion at January 20255 and about $4.2 billion at January 20266, contracted revenue that customers have not yet been invoiced for.

The watch point is deferred revenue growth against RPO growth. If the gap widens further in fiscal 2027, customers are committing to CrowdStrike while paying for it on terms that erode the prepayment advantage.
