Reserve Replacement: 158 PercentNarrow moat

Chevron (CVX) — moat facet

Chevron replaced 158 percent of its 2025 production, mostly by buying Hess, and its five-year replacement rate is still below 100 percent.

An oil company shrinks every day it does not find or buy more oil, and in 2025 Chevron more than made up for what it produced. Its proved reserves were 10,591 million barrels of oil equivalent at the end of 2025, against 9,804 million a year earlier1, and the one-year reserve replacement ratio was 158 percent2.

Proved reserves (million barrels of oil equivalent)11,06920239,804202410,5912025Chevron Form 10-K FY2025
The Hess purchase refilled most, not all, of the 2024 fall.

The number needs reading carefully, because most of it was bought. In Other Americas alone, 193 million barrels of the additions were purchases attributable to the Hess interests in Guyana's Stabroek block3. Two years earlier Chevron had 11,069 million barrels4; the 2025 figure is still below that. The five-year and ten-year replacement ratios, which smooth out an acquisition, were 91 percent and 95 percent5, just under the level needed to stand still.

Where the barrels are matters as much as how many. Chevron says 43 percent of its proved reserves are in the United States, 15 percent in Australia and 11 percent in Kazakhstan6. The Kazakh share sits in a concession that ends in 2033, which the Tengiz page covers.

Divide the reserves by production and the shelf holds about 7.8 years of output at the 2025 rate of 3,723 thousand barrels a day7. That is not unusual for the industry, but it is the plain arithmetic of an extractive business: every eight years or so, the company has to find or buy another Chevron.

The acquisition also changed the mix. The Hess purchase contributed 261 thousand barrels a day of the 2025 production increase and legacy operations 124 thousand8, so about two-thirds of the new volume, and most of the reserves that came with it, were bought rather than found9.

Reserve replacement is the moat's fuel gauge. A five-year ratio climbing back above 100 percent without another large acquisition would show Chevron can refill the tank with the drill bit; a ratio that only rises in acquisition years would mean the reserves are bought, and priced accordingly.

Moat trajectory: Holding steady

Reserves up 8% in 2025 on the Hess purchase; five-year ratio 91%.

About 7.8 years of production; a five-year ratio below 100% means the shelf is emptying without deals.
