⚠ Hess Nearly Doubled the Net DebtModerate threat

Chevron (CVX) — threat to the moat

Hess nearly doubled Chevron's net debt, and the fastest repayment in its history needed $104 oil.

Hess was paid for mostly in shares, but it still changed the balance sheet. Net debt rose from $17,756 million at the end of 2024 to $34,461 million at the end of 20251, about 94 percent higher2. The acquisition brought $8.8 billion of Hess debt by principal value3.

Up 94% in 2025, down $6 billion by June.

Net debt against operating cash flow went from 0.4 times in 2023 to 1.0 times in 20254. That is still modest for a company of Chevron's size, and the record $8.4 billion repayment in the second quarter of 20265 shows how fast high prices can reverse it.

But the repayment came from $104 Brent6. At the $69 average of 20257, Chevron's cash flow covered its dividends and buybacks only with help from the balance sheet.

Enterprise value shows the debt in the price. It was $431.95 billion in September 2026 against a market value of $403.40 billion8, a difference of about $28.6 billion9, close to the net debt Chevron reported at the end of June10.

The ratio to follow is net debt to trailing operating cash flow, 0.6 times at the end of June 202611. If it returns toward 1.0 times when oil prices fall back, the war-quarter repayment was borrowed time.
