⚠ A Commodities Business, in Its Own WordsHigh threat
Chevron (CVX) — threat to the moat
Chevron earned $12.1 billion in one quarter at $104 Brent and $12.3 billion in all of 2025 at $69, which is the whole business in two numbers.
Chevron describes its own business plainly: it is "primarily in a commodities business that has a history of price volatility"1, and "An investment in the company carries significant exposure to fluctuations in global prices of crude oil, natural gas, and natural gas liquids"2.
The record shows what that means. Chevron lost $5,543 million in 2020 and earned $35,465 million in 20223, with largely the same assets. Between 2024 and 2025 Brent fell from $81 to $694 and upstream earnings fell $5,780 million56, about $480 million for each dollar, although that crude comparison also carries Hess, currency and Tengiz effects7. A third-party estimate puts the sensitivity at about $550 million of after-tax earnings for each dollar move in Brent8. ExxonMobil, which discloses its own figure, puts its upstream sensitivity at about $700 million a dollar9.
The second quarter of 2026 shows the upside. With Brent at $104, Chevron earned $12,072 million in a single quarter, almost as much as in all of 20251011.
Nothing in the moat changes this. Good assets and a strong balance sheet let Chevron survive a low price; they do not stop the price falling. The risk factor is not boilerplate; it is the business.
The 2025 release was explicit about what changed: reported earnings fell "primarily due to lower crude oil prices, lower affiliate earnings and unfavorable foreign currency effects"12. Two of those three causes are prices.
Average Brent in the quarter is the figure this threat turns on. A return to the $60s would put Chevron back near its 2025 earnings of $12.3 billion, whatever the cost programmes achieve.
About $550M of after-tax earnings per $1 on a third-party estimate; a return to $60s Brent resets earnings to 2025 levels.
