Sumitomo split its media segment into a growing IT business and a cable business carrying an Ethiopian loss.
Media & Digital lost ¥1.0 billion in the year to March 2024, then earned ¥45.2 billion in 2025 and ¥51.2 billion in 202612. Its revenue was ¥790.9 billion and its assets ¥1,492.7 billion3, a return of about 3.4%4.
From April 2026 the segment was split. Digital AI, holding SCSK, earned ¥19.4 billion and ¥35.3 billion on the restated basis and is forecast at ¥53.0 billion5. Communication Services, holding JCOM and the Ethiopian telecom venture, earned ¥25.8 billion and ¥16.0 billion and is forecast at ¥15.0 billion6.
The segment's history shows why. The loss in the year to March 2024 included a ¥35,215 million loss on the Myanmar telecom business7; the growth since came from SCSK. The two halves now run on different strategies.
The segment also sold assets: T-Gaia for about ¥50 billion and, through SCSK, ARGO GRAPHICS for about ¥19 billion8. Digital AI's underlying profit was ¥33.0 billion in the latest year and is forecast at ¥53.0 billion9.
The measure is the two new segments' combined profit: ¥68.0 billion forecast for the current year10, against ¥51.2 billion.
