The arrangement has advantages too: Sumitomo committed about ¥330 billion3 rather than the full equity cost.

Sumitomo's own leasing partnership shows the alternative model: a long-term relationship in which it holds half, through Sumitomo Mitsui Finance and Leasing4. Sumisho Air Lease is a different kind of partnership, with investors whose horizons may be shorter.

The measure is the ownership structure over the next five years. A change forced by a partner's exit would test Sumitomo's ability to keep the position it paid for.
